St George’s is a warm-hearted evangelical-oriented church situated in the West Yorkshire town of Halifax.  The congregations aim to live out their lives according to the Gospel values of:

  • openness to God’s spirit and personal vocation to serve God and witness to him


To lead them in this new chapter of their story they are looking for a vicar who is an effective and collaborative leader; able to bring out the best in people and empower them for mission and ministry; who will value and nurture the contribution of others.

  • To communicate the Good News of Jesus to all and especially to those facing issues around social deprivation
  • To work with us to renew our vision to connect even more effectively with our community
  • To  think outside the box and to  help us to explore new ways of making disciples
  • To offer a collaborative style of leadership so that the gifts and insights of many are developed and the tasks of leadership and ministry are shared.
  • To be actively supportive and engaged in the work of local schools



Our new vicar will be, sociable, approachable, empathetic, willing to challenge where appropriate, organised and flexible.

He/ she will have the ability to:

  • Preach  and lead worship so as to inspire and grow God’s people
  • Lead collaboratively so as to build up others in ministry and leadership
  • Engage with the community liaising  also with other churches and lay agencies involved in working to relieve  poverty
  • Understand the challenges and joys of Children’s and Youth Work and supporting those who lead this.
  • Work ecumenically and with other Anglican churches.

About Us 

The parish of Ovenden is situated on the northern side of the town of Halifax. The church serves an area with some pockets of deprivation and poverty.  The church has recently installed a small kitchen area and facilities for the disabled. The parish are presently working on creating a small play area for young children.

The Anglican Diocese of Leeds comprises five episcopal areas, each coterminous with an archdeaconry. Revd Nicholas Baines). The Bishop of Huddersfield is The Rt. Revd Dr Jonathan Gibbs and the Archdeacon of Halifax is The Venerable Dr Anne Dawtry.
