Rowley Regis - both as parish and market town - is a Black Country community of strong self-identity yet indeterminate boundaries with parts within the Local Authority of Sandwell and parts within Dudley. It is on the edge of the Birmingham Diocese, and adjoins the Worcester Diocese.

There has been a church on the top of 'Rowley Hill' since the 12th Century, and St Giles is a notable landmark in the parish. There have been a number of church buildings on the site and the present one dates from the 1920's. It is a pleasant, well-constructed and maintained brick building, with some good quality wooden furniture and glass. The congregation, with a good eye for practicalities, look after it well. There is a large churchyard still used for burials, with a good deal of visiting of graves by local people.

Very important is the relationship with St Michaels CofE High School, where the Head Teacher is keen to endorse and build on the church connection and welcomes the incumbent to engage with staff and pupils.

We are seeking an imaginative community-minded priest to
lead this church in mission and service, and to contribute to the life of the CofE High School close by.
St Giles serves a largely residential Black Country community,
conscious of its history and local culture, and appreciative of
traditional parish ministry.

The parish benefits from the contribution of two retired clergy, and has significant mission opportunity through the pastoral offices. It enjoys a supportive relationship with neighbouring parishes in a highly collaborative deanery.

Building on strong foundations, the new priest needs to:

  • foster the gifts of the current worshippers;
  • teach and challenge both new and mature Christians;
  • animate the spiritual potential in school pupils and staff;
  • energise the church’s outreach, particularly with young people;
  • excite existing Christians with the prospect of new growth.

Role Description for this post (as required under Common Tenure)

  • To share with the Bishop both the cure of souls and in the responsibility, held under God, for the mission and ministry in this parish. This particularly involves attending to and advancing the areas of transformation described in the Transforming Church initiative in the Diocese, including working with appropriate consultants and giving due weight to agreed parish priorities;
  • To be the Parish priest in this Benefice having regard to the calling and responsibilities of the clergy as described in the Canons, the Ordinal, the Code of Professional Conduct for the clergy and other relevant legislation;
  • To work with the PCC towards the development of the local church as described in the parish statement and and parish targets agreed subsequently, and to review these areas for development regularly with the Churchwardens and the PCC;
  • Overall, to ensure that a high standard of worship, preaching, outreach and pastoral care is provided.

Key tasks specific to this appointment:

  • To make mission and outreach the clear and acknowledged priority of the church, to bring new people to faith and nourish them as disciples;
  • To deliver worship which will prove enriching and accessible, and which encourages newcomers to step into the Christian community;
  • To strengthen and develop lay education and lay ministry, so that church members gain the confidence to witness in daily life and share in the church’s ministry;
  • To engage with the life of St Michael’s School to underline its distinctive Christian character and connect with families in the community;
  • To work for a sustainable future for St Giles in terms of leadership, organisation and finance.

The Bishop, the Rt Revd David Urquhart, looks for priests to serve as incumbents who have the capacity to grow local church in spiritual depth, in numbers, in confident witness, and in serious engagement with their community. Central to this is the task of identifying, encouraging and endorsing the ministry of others and entrusting them with real responsibility in the work of mission and outreach.

The priest appointed to this role must have been ordained in the Church of England or a church in communion with it and must have exercised at least three years ordained ministry. Those applying to be considered must have the right to work in the UK as this vacancy has does not yet qualify to sponsor a visa. The priest appointed will be an office holder under Common Tenure, and the Ecclesiastical Offices (Terms of Service) Regulations will apply.

It is important that the priest appointed plays a full part in the life of the deanery, particularly Chapter and Synod, and in the wider programmes of the Diocese. Opportunities for ecumenical collaboration should also be pursued, and good relationships sought with other faith communities.

The appointment to this parish rests with the Lord Chancellor.
