You will lead Church Wigan, which is transforming the way we grow worshipping communities in the 21st Century.

You will be offered a suitable home in the Wigan area from where you can build your ministry.

Applications Close: 26th June 2019
Interviews: 18th July 2019

Church Wigan is the product of much prayer and discussion in the local churches. The deanery was the recipient of the first Strategic Development Fund Grant allocated by the Church Commissioners for the ‘Transforming Wigan’ project with the specific objective of 'turning around the mission and financial strength of the deanery of Wigan'. We now have a radical vision, strategy and structure that is already producing growth with new forms of team ministry and a focus on mission and planting new worship communities.

The proposed new pastoral scheme creates seven parishes (called hubs) in a single benefice. Each Hub parish will have two stipendiary Team Vicars, one serving as Hub Leader and one as Associate Hub Leader. Your role as Team Rector of Church Wigan will be to convene, support, challenge and develop the Church Wigan leadership team as they seek to lead the change and continue to grow Church Wigan.

When Church Wigan is fully and legally established (anticipated in January 2020) you will have the legal title of Team Rector, and your working title will be Church Wigan Team Leader. You will be the head of a team of clergy, licensed ministers and other leaders who are creating seven new parishes in one team benefice from the 29 existing parishes.

This is a ground-breaking role which demands many skills and encompasses many tasks including seeking and equipping leaders, mentoring and supporting colleagues, organising and delegating work, and supporting and managing change. It is a new role for a strategic servant-leader who will be ‘first among equals’, embracing the vision and strategy as formed through the Transforming Wigan movement and committed to leading this change and seeing it through. You will be a ‘nest-keeper’ allowing others to fly.

You will rejoice when your fruit grows on other peoples’ trees. Ultimately you will thrive through seeing all the parts flourish.

Church Wigan is looking for a priest who will:

  • oversee the equipping of others for the work in ministry
  • help deliver the strategy collaboratively with other leaders
  • support the growth of the church through the planting and refreshing of worship communities
  • prioritise and delegate well
  • inspire and shape a new culture.

Our ideal candidate will:

  • be a courageous, faithful leader of leaders
  • be a wise, humble, experienced servant-leader of servant leaders who is fully reliant on God
  • be committed to serving God’s mission to the whole people of Wigan knowing you are called to dwell well here
  • be the ‘lead-follower’ who is genuinely approachable and trustworthy
  • desire to enable leaders and followers to flourish and grow in their ministries and to always give the glory to God
  • embrace the vision and strategy as formed through the Transforming Wigan movement
  • be committed to leading this change and seeing it through
  • be grounded in prayer with depth of spirituality and theology
  • communicate your faith naturally through who you are and what you say and do
  • wait on God and encourage your fellow leaders to do so together
  • be a passionate worshipper, at ease with all the worship traditions of the Church of England.

For many years we have been working to achieve growth in our diocese. We have used different ways to express this but the aim and direction of travel has remained the same – consistent with the whole of the Church of England. When Bishop Paul was installed he adopted our growth agenda refreshing it by saying ‘we are asking God for a bigger church so we can make a bigger difference; more people knowing Jesus more justice in the world’.

This is how we express our mission.

We think we will achieve this mission if we have:

100 new congregations
1,000 new leaders
10,000 disciples

To help us do this we are calling every worshipping Christian in our diocese to:

  • sign up to the Bishop of Liverpool’s Rule of Life which will encourage and support us to Read, Learn, Pray, Give, Serve, Tell
  • bring 1 friend into the regular worshipping and serving life of the church (bring one friend)
  • do 10 acts of service or find 10 new points of connection beyond the walls of the church (do ten things)
