This is a unique opportunity for experienced Christian youth workers/ministers. We are looking for someone who can build positive relationships quickly and can communicate well; to join us in an unfolding adventure to engage, envision, equip and empower a variety of churches in their mission with young people.
It’s an exciting time to join a growing team, specifically seeking to develop over 50 new expressions of youth ministry, train hundreds of volunteers and be part of thousands of people across the diocese to respond to the love of Christ.

Birmingham is the UK’s second city with the youngest urban population in Europe and one of the most lively and diverse regions. The Church of England, Birmingham, covers an area of nearly 300 square miles and includes parishes in the West Midlands including Birmingham and parts of Solihull, Sandwell, Warwickshire and Worcestershire. Right at the heart of what we do there are over 187 Church of England places of worship with an average weekly attendance of 17,000 from a population of 1.5 million. These churches represent a wide scope of Church tradition and breadth of ethnicity.
Building upon the ongoing success of our innovative ‘Growing Younger’ initiative, we are committed to supporting youth ministry in every one of our parishes. This youth ministry will look different in every context, but will share a common passion to connect, support and disciple young people in lively and personal faith. With support from Church Commissioners strategic development funding, and wider funding sources we are making a significant investment in core staff to serve our parishes in this common commitment. To continue this next exciting phase of Growing Younger, we are looking to recruit a Youth Development Worker to work with the Growing Younger Advisor, Emma Sargeant and within the wider Parish Mission Support team headed up by Liz Dumain.
Our plan is to support, train and encourage parishes to develop and grow ‘cell’-based youth ministry connected across parishes into ‘hubs’ (where several cells come together). This will be supported by occasional larger gatherings in a variety of styles. We are using a model that we believe supports young people to be rooted in their parish, builds relationship, feels safe, is ‘personal but connected to a greater gathering’ and is very flexible so will work in all contexts.
To develop the cells we want to envision and encourage new and existing volunteer youth leaders (most church-based, but some network-based); training and supporting them to reach out and connect with young people, building relationships, sharing faith and discipleship together.
