The Ministry Division serves the House of Bishops and Archbishops’ Council by guiding and supporting the church in the task of calling, equipping, sending and supporting those in ministry. Our aim is to increase the number of those coming forward for ordained and lay ministry to grow the church and build the Kingdom. We work in partnership with Dioceses, Theological Education Institutions, and other bodies by:

  • Assessing, analysing, and communicating the scale and need of the diverse range of ministries needed to serve the people of England
  • Enabling and ensuring smooth processes to engage the best candidates for that range of ministries
  • Overseeing and ensuring training, education and development appropriate for the ministries undertaken
  • Strengthening a culture and practice of appropriate lifelong learning throughout the church.

As Communications Officer, you will be responsible for communicating with a wide range of stakeholders including bishops, dioceses, colleges, ministers, and those in the vocations process, to promote the vision for Ministry.

You will also resource the staff team by providing publications, publicity and events materials that accurately communicate our key messages. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring that the work of Ministry is experienced as supportive, responsive and professional in a rapidly changing culture in the church and beyond.

Strategy and project support

  • Leading on communications strategy for Ministry Division, in collaboration with our Senior Management Team
  • Coordinating communication with key stakeholders and maintaining a forward-looking communications calendar
  • Advising on communications strategy for specific projects, such as helping colleagues with stakeholder analysis
  • Tailoring messages to audience
  • Producing presentations, reports, briefings, booklets, newsletters, press releases, web content etc.
  • Working with our Events Officer to produce required material for conferences and consultations, such as presentations and handouts
  • Developing and maintaining brand identity

Website

  • Leading on departmental web content and strategy
  • Using analytics to optimise page layout and content
  • Keeping information up to date
  • Working with the Website Manager to ensure departmental web content is in line with the overall CofE website strategy and brand

Media

  • Identifying opportunities to raise the profile of Ministry nationally
  • Sourcing stories to improve media responsiveness
  • Working with the Senior Media Officer to produce press releases and briefings

Social media

  • Identifying opportunities to use social media to inspire others to consider a vocation to lay or ordained ministry
  • Developing the use of social media to create hubs or online communities for the sharing of good practice
  • Sourcing stories which can be shared through the Church’s social media channels
  • Working with the Digital Content Manager to schedule content and ensure it is in line with the overall CofE digital strategy and brand

This role needs someone with the following knowledge, aptitude and skills :

Essential

Strategy and project support

  • A skilful and creative communicator with the ability to demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills particularly to reach those on the fringes of the church, communicating with energy and clarity
  • Proactive and entrepreneurial in identifying new opportunities to share the vision for ministry
  • Research skills and experience in communications strategy to inform and direct stakeholder analysis and messaging
  • Ability to make accurate judgements about trends and situations
  • Proficient IT skills and experience of using Microsoft Office Packages, HTML and CMS
  • Desk top publishing skills (Microsoft Publisher) and a high level of visual awareness
  • Understanding the importance of brand identity and able to work with a brand both to maintain and develop it
  • Accurate and reliable over attention to detail with strong administrative capabilities.
  • Accurate written English and excellent proofreading

Website and social media

  • Active user of social media and familiar with its potential
  • Experience in website content management including the use of analytics to optimise page layout and content
  • Experience of implementing effective communication campaigns across multiple media
  • Experience in identifying/sourcing stories to support messaging
  • Experience in using social medial to build communities of interest

Personality and Integrity

  • Ability to influence and inspire colleagues to adopt good practice
  • Confident in church and theological terms and knowledgeable about the structures of the Church of England
  • Experience in a fast paced and demanding workplace, able to demonstrate the capacity to organise a heavy workload, set priorities and delegate where possible.
  • Discreet and reliable in observing confidentiality
